Jonathen - interesting... I hope to be able to try (1) roaming data, (2) local MNO data, (3) official Olympic venue WiFi and (4) local (and hopefully non-tourist) WiFi to see the differences...

The Lonely Planet Audio Phrasebook apps for the iPhone (available from the app store) look quite good... the Mandarin one is the only one that's free and, although I don't speak a word of mandarin it seems to be up to the job of basic conversation... I'd be interested to know how useful these actually are in the real world though.

I think Ben should try to get a portable mobile network into China... I'm sure they're far more relaxed about that sort of thing than the Maldivians.....................
