With more Linux devices coming to the market, hopefully we'll see an end to this "big bang" software update mentality. If the browser needs to be updated, that doesn't mean that the whole software stack needs to be wiped, does it now?

Hmmm... I wonder if T9 recognises "apt-get"... :-)

hit the nail on the head. there should be zero reason we need another computer to update our "multimedia computers." (even thought the E90 isn't an Nseries, it still runs S60)

Ouch; that's just sucky. Then again, if S60 could do firmware updates from a memory card OTA that would help in these situations. I really wonder what that is not possible/done these days.

Your missing the point... why should you need a computer to update in the first place?! If the phone is an "appliance" then it's rubbish because I have plenty of other appliances that can update themselves from a remote server or storage device (games consoles, dvd player voip handset etc) but if the phone is a computer (as Nokia would have us believe) then it's even worse!.. When the new version of OSX came out I didn't have to connect my Macbook to another computer to update it I just shoved a CD in and rebooted! incremental OS updates? it handles it internally!

So, Nokia. if you're going to tell us that your S60 devices are "Multimedia computers" then do it properly! you already have OTA updating handsets!, make that the standard across the range!

On the other hand, if your phones are just appliance-like devices... give them a sensible bootloader that can upgrade the firmware from a memory card!

Nokia removed Vista support because the app kept/keeps crashing and breaking handsets.

Agree about the N81.... But anyway, just run NSU in an XP compatibility mode under Vista. NSU won't know the difference. 8-)

Having said that, of course Nokia should fix this right NOW - it's unacceptable to have regular users fiddling with compatibility modes....

Maybe somoething in Vista SP1 screwed with Nokia Software Updater???
