This kind of thing has already hit the UK. I noticed this advert in a magazine yesterday:

If you haven't, I'd highly recommend the book "It's Not News, It's Fark: How Mass Media Tries to Pass Off Crap as News" by Drew Curtis (the founder of Fark.com). It speaks to this kind of thing exactly, blowing things up to make a story out of it -- very good stuff!

Rubbish! I've been walking around my garden texting all afternoon, and I was perfectly safe. Getting hit by a car, now that's dangerous.

HAHA well said -- just like it's not DRIVING that's dangerous, it's HITTING THINGS.

Oh crud, I'm always tapping away at my mobile whilst walking - texting only taking up a fraction of that. Does it mean I'm okay surfing the net, checking my location, and Jaiku-ing, as long as I avoid texting?

    Yeah perfectly fine Anthony. ;-)
