You'd have to jailbreak it and have 'installer' installed which Apple didn't authorize. It was only after several firmware updates and offered SDKs that the App store was finally born. True that the G1 is not an iPhone but it sure is a step in the right direction. In the end, the consumer wins because competition is good.
