O2 say sorry, but you still (probably) can’t have an iPhone 3G

Just had a text from O2 with a link to information on iPhone 3G availability and an apology (at the bottom) over the launch shambles (of sorts)…. Here’s the key bits that confirm some of the other reports we’ve seen about stock:

  • What is the point in releasing an apparently eagerly anticipated phone with hardly any stock?

    They are either extremely stupid for not ordering enough, or very clever. Because by making everyone assume there won't be enough of the product, you'll get all the phone fanatics running along to the Carphone Warehouse or o2 stores, with their money, and persuading anyone else to go and get one too, because if they don't make up their mind, they won't get one. It also works out as PR... "All PR is good PR" or something like that.

    I like to think o2 are stupid though.

  • It's nothing to do with O2 - Apple will give them as many handsets as they choose. It's a side-effect of a global launch day, but I agree the publicity is probably a price worth paying and anyone (myself included) who will probably miss out on launch day will have a whine and then buy one anyway.

    O2 being stupid is an entirely different matter, and unrelated :-)
