This was the subject of some discussion at the E71 and E66 launch event.
BB Connect is AFAIK a Blackberry-developed product, so I assumed they either didn't want to give people the option to select non-BB devices, didn't see a take-up that warranted the costs or didn't want to provide an easy migration path away form BB... or all three :-)
