Completely agree! I can never find the right combo of phone and billing plan and end up paying for more than I need to just make sure I get a decent phone. I'm definitely thinking of buying SIM-free next time and then finding a tariff but, as you point out, this doesn't necessarily result in the best contract terms either!

Great post and I fully agree. For those exact reasons I 'downgraded' to an o2 simplicity tariff to get a month by month contract with a great mix of minutes, texts and unlimited mobile internet.

Handset wise I generally upgrade on my own terms every 6 months selling the old handset to part subsidise the new one. Works out as far better value to a heavy user in my opinion.
