Is it a new PAYG SIM?

Call 343, get switched to the new PAYG animal packages, Dolphin in particular (free access to Facebook/Bebo/etc with £10/month top-up).
On the animal packages it's £2 a day maximum charge for data.

Sam, WiFi on mobiles is not the answer. You will pay an awful lot more for a worse experience. WiMax certainly isn't, you are under the marketing spell of Intel there, and I don't have the heart to repeat my previous rants on that one.

£5 data add-on and a 3 PAYG SIM are all you need to get 1GB of HSDPA handset data. I bet you anything you'll never use it up in one month.

best deal is T-Mobile for £7.50 because even if you go over the 1GB allowance there is no charge.... if you go way over you get contacted to moderate use but no extra money is paid

Grab a T-Mobile PAYG SIM - on any of their tariffs data use is capped at £1 per day. For every day use 3's £5 per month is market leading and better value, but for ad-hoc testing T-Mob's is better IMO. Also you don't have to order any 'add-ons' for the T-Mob offer, where 3 will charge you the regular rate if you don't explicitly add the £5 option (from memory).

If you're on Orange you can get an 'extra' where they deduct £1 from your pre-pay credit and you get unlimited internet access until midnight that day. I used it the other day to while away a long train journey when I had a PDA with an orange PAYG sim in it, and it worked fine

why laugable? you will struggle to use a gig on handset. battery is the bigger problem.

You can get the 3GB plan for £7.5O and use your handset as a modem for your PC as well -- so you;d save money relative to your fixed ISP, if saving money is your thing.

the solutions and services are avilable if you want them. much easier to find than firing off lenghty emails to custoemr services.

Five pounds for a gig is still laughable. Considering that from my ISP I pay around £18 - £20 for a 2mg connection, which is unlimited (although I have to comply to the FUP), and generally works alright.

As for tube rides and stuff... Where there's a will there's a way. And paying £7.50 for a travel card is one way I don't go for!

have you tried Boingo and Devicescape to connect across WLAN networks? At least in the US data is a flat fee ...

Nokia Maps - You need to download the maps onto your phone to be honest, it will do it over 3G, but it will eat your allowance damn fast. And ensure you are running the latest version (its no longer in Beta). It rules!

Oh yeah, I didn't mean to claim it wasn't in non-city areas, I mean you can almost guarantee it if you're anywhere near a city/large town.

In fact, HSDPA covers a lot of non-city areas too now. I've used it successfully all over the place.

get ewan to sort you out with a contract. basic rule of flash mobile is you need to spend a little money. no point dinking around with low-end phones or pay as you go data.

get sim-only with no lock-in from T-Mob and get the data add-on for £5 month. Or you could try 3 pre-pay, whch offers 1GB for £5 (but it runs out after a month). £5 is not even 2 pints these days. or half a cocktail. it's barely even a tube ride.

it's well documeted on smstxt new that orange is not your firend for data ... £10 for a bit of facebook, what a scam.

nokia maps is pretty good -- you need nake sure you've got the newish beta version -- can,t think of anything better.

i agree, WiFi should be on all good phones

never use a 3g data phone with payg or monthly sim, unless you have a flat rate tariff.
t-mobile at least limit data to a max of £1 a day on PAYG
o2 offer a flat £7.50 a month bolt on for PAYG as well

realistically no E66 users are PAYG.
