The only way I've found round it is
a) Use HTTPS where possible
b) Use a VPN

What if I be REALLY nice to you... ;)
To verify, live -> web -> web preferences.
There you can switch transcoding on or off. Even if it's on, you get a choice of high, medium, low compression - or no images.
Just tried it on my N95 8GB and I don't see any compression.

However, I just used kcjh's tip and my phone does not connect to the web at all. Yep, but I have one of those we-do-not-speak-of smartphones
