she will be shocked that someone from the UK actually had the nerve to engage with a stranger on a matter of protocol/politeness.

Do it. You will feel much empowered. Next time it will feel much easier, believe me.

I can vouch for that - last time I saw Mr Body he had so much apparatus he had to strap much of it to his belt.
